8th Grade Student’s Workbook: Making Math Meaningful Series

Eighth grade – the last year before high school.  Developmentally, the students are on an emotional rollercoaster, but their natural interest in mathematics is beginning to peak.  The eighth grader can easily get frustrated, yet working through frustration teaches determination and builds confidence.  They need to be challenged, and the topics in this workbook do exactly that!  Instead of the teacher giving all of the rules and laws to the students, the Group Sheets lead them to discover much of this for themselves.  Although this workbook will help to strengthen math skills, the real focus is on developing higher-level mathematical thinking.  And remember, enthusiasm for learning is one of the greatest gifts that a teacher can give to students.

About the Author

Jamie York’s search for meaningful education led him to Shining Mountain Waldorf School (in Boulder, Colorado), where he started teaching math in 1994. In addition to teaching middle and high school math, Jamie consults at Waldorf schools and teaches math workshops across North America. In the summer, he serves on the faculty at the Center of Anthroposophy (in Wilton, NH) as part of their Waldorf High School Teacher Education Program and adjunct professor of Antioch University, NH.

This is a great curriculum, I have used it for homeschool with both my children (one now graduated and one starting high school). We do use it one year behind the recommended age (i.e. 6th gr book in 7th grade, etc)–my kids understand and retain better and are still ahead of the “norm” in public school. There is no provided schedule but we just work through the units and worksheets together at the child’s own pace.
