In their own style the Greek myths are a preparation for Christianity, as real as the stories told in the Old Testament. Their magnificent pictures carry the central ideas of human evolution which are brought down to earth in Christian history. Myths are not to be treated lightly; they are history in its cosmic aspect, revealing the creative activity of gods. Charles Williams wrote of the mysterious kingdom of Arthur that the historic relationships lie eastward, the mythical to the west. In the mystery of Christianity, the chronicles that form the Old Testament come from the east, the Greek myths from the west. The Greek contribution shows us the essentially cosmic aspect: the gods dominate the myths, whereas in the Old Testament it is the human factor that is stressed. Classical gods and Hebrew prophets share together in the making of Christianity. The old Greek tales are worth recalling if forgotten, well worth discovering for the first time. – From the back cover
