What Julianna Could See

And if she stayed still
Without making a sound
She could see gnomes
Helping plants through the ground.

This radiant picture book was written for Julianna Margulies – the film actor and former star of the hit television series “ER” – when she was six years old. Her father, Paul Margulies, captures the pure openness of a child’s imagination. These reflections on what a small girl sees around her remind us all, young and old, that life’s riches can come to us through our loving attention to the simple and “ordinary.”

The vibrant images by Famke Zonneveld (the illustrator of Living Alphabet) bring this book to life.

About the Author

Paul Margulies majored in philosophy at Dartmouth College and was creative director for advertising agencies in New York, London, and Paris, where he helped develop advertising campaigns such as the “plop, plop, fizz, fizz” commercials for Alka-Seltzer. He was the author of Gold Steps, Stone Steps (1972, Harlan Quist) and lectured on philosophy and Anthroposophy at the Open Center in New York and at Rudolf Steiner House in London. He also led study groups on Anthroposophy. Paul and his wife Vickie lived for many years with their dog Toto in an old farmhouse in western Massachusetts. Paul passed away on October 7, 2014.

Famke Zonneveld, born in Indonesia in 1938, was an art teacher and an artist in watercolor, stained glass, lazure wall painting, and fiber arts. She taught crafts and the history of architecture at the Rudolf Steiner School in NYC and studied Goethe’s color theories with Donald Hall, a student of Beppe Assensa. Her works are in numerous public and private collections. She died in 2005.
