Secrets of the Bible Story of Creation: In the Context of His Teaching Concerning the Origin and Evolution of Language

Handbook for Study

A religious minded person of the present time, if reasonably observant, does not need to be told that humanity is gravely threatened with the utter loss of the Bible. The threat of intellectual scholarship applies primarily to the Old Testament, but also to the New. In the Old Testament, the passage to which the lecture cycle applies that we are now to examine is already almost wholly deprived of intelligent modern consideration. This threat remains by no means within the limited realm where it originates, that of intellectual scholarship. It has already penetrated within the circle of educated church people. Indeed, unless a counter-restorative influence becomes effective in the near future, the Christian Church will find the teachings of the Geneses story of creation, as a part of its spiritual conception of the world, almost impossible. -Olin Wannamaker

About the Author

Olin D. Wannamaker (1875-1974) was an American educator and a prominent leader in the Anthroposophical Society in America. After earning degrees from Vanderbilt and Harvard and holding educational posts in China and the U.S., Wannamaker was drawn to Anthroposophy in the 1920s, moving to the movement’s center in Dornach, Switzerland. He later served as chairman of the Anthroposophical Society in America from 1958 to 1962, in addition to working as a lecturer and translator of Rudolf Steiner’s autobiography. He died in 1974 at the age of 98.

Rudolf Steiner (b. Rudolf Joseph Lorenz Steiner, 1861–1925) was born in the small village of Kraljevec, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Croatia), where he grew up. As a young man, he lived in Weimar and Berlin, where he became a well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, known especially for his work with Goethe’s scientific writings. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he began to develop his early philosophical principles into an approach to systematic research into psychological and spiritual phenomena. Formally beginning his spiritual teaching career under the auspices of the Theosophical Society, Steiner came to use the term Anthroposophy (and spiritual science) for his philosophy, spiritual research, and findings. The influence of Steiner’s multifaceted genius has led to innovative and holistic approaches in medicine, various therapies, philosophy, religious renewal, Waldorf education, education for special needs, threefold economics, biodynamic agriculture, Goethean science, architecture, and the arts of drama, speech, and eurythmy. In 1924, Rudolf Steiner founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which today has branches throughout the world. He died in Dornach, Switzerland.
