Cymatics: Newly Revised, Expanded Edition

Cymatics, the study of wave phenomena, was pioneered by Swiss medical doctor and natural scientist, Hans Jenny (1904-1972). The core of this edition is Jenny’s two volumes originally published in 1967 and 1974, documenting over 14 years of his meticulous experiments using audible sound to excite powders, pastes, and liquids into life-like, flowing forms. The stunning array of over 360 images reflects a variety of patterns found throughout nature, art, and architecture. The photographs in this book consist entirely of experimental phenomena. There were no computer-generated images.

In this expanded edition, we have added a new foreword by NY Times best-selling author, Ted Gioia, who has written extensively about the impact of music on culture throughout history. An assortment of commentaries by leading researchers, artists, and scientists, articulate how Jenny’s body of work has profoundly influenced a wide range of disciplines.

About the Author

Dr. Hans Jenny was a physician and natural scientist who coined the term Cymatics to describe acoustic effects of sound wave phenomena. Dr Hans Jenny started to experiment with different liquids and solids and continuous vibrating frequencies to test the physics of sound further. He was coined the term ‘Cymatics’ containing the Greek word, ‘Kyma’ which means ‘wave.’ His seminal research was compiled in a book of the same name and contains hundreds of photos showing his results.
