Speech, Drama & Storytelling
Speech, drama, and storytelling form a vital artistic stream within anthroposophy, grounded in the understanding that the spoken word carries formative spiritual forces that shape both speaker and listener. Rudolf Steiner’s 1924 Speech and Drama course (GA 282), given in collaboration with Marie Steiner-von Sivers, established the art of creative speech formation (Sprachgestaltung) as a distinct discipline — training the voice, breath, and articulation to reveal the inner life of language.
This collection of approximately 120 titles encompasses speech formation exercises, dramatic theory, stagecraft, the art of storytelling for children and adults, and the oral tradition as a vehicle of spiritual culture. Marie Steiner-von Sivers’ pioneering work on recitation and declamation is well represented, alongside contemporary practitioners who bring speech formation into therapeutic, educational, and performance contexts. Waldorf teachers will find storytelling guides organized by grade level, fairy tale collections suited to the curriculum, and resources for class plays. Titles on the mystery dramas written by Steiner himself — four plays performed annually at the Goetheanum — offer a unique window into dramatic art conceived as spiritual practice.
For the movement art that makes speech visible, see the Eurythmy category. Poetry collections and literary works appear in Poetry & Literature.
