Cosmic Rhythms & Planting Calendars
Cosmic rhythms and planting calendars represent one of the most distinctive aspects of biodynamic agriculture: the practice of timing sowing, cultivating, and harvesting according to the positions of the moon, planets, and stars. Maria Thun (1922–2012) pioneered over fifty years of empirical research correlating lunar and planetary rhythms with plant growth, and her annual Biodynamic Calendar remains the most widely used planting calendar in biodynamic and organic farming worldwide.
This collection includes the current edition of Maria Thun’s calendar, her research compendium Results from the Biodynamic Sowing and Planting Calendar, and complementary works by Matthias Thun. You will also find Brian Keats’s southern-hemisphere planting guides and titles on the astronomical principles underlying these rhythms, as explained in Steiner’s Agriculture Course.
These resources are used by biodynamic farmers, organic gardeners, winemakers timing their vineyard work, and anyone curious about the influence of celestial rhythms on plant life. See Biodynamic Farming for related titles on preparations and soil management.
