Of all the preparations in Uriel's pharmacy, this is the one whose central substance falls out of the sky.

How does it work?

Meteoric iron. Some fifteen thousand tons of meteor dust reach the Earth every year — cosmic iron, alloyed with cobalt and nickel, arriving already transformed by its burning passage through the atmosphere. Uriel writes of meteoric iron that it carries “the energy of flaming meteors streaking across the sky,” and that properly prepared it “brings us light and warmth in a form we can assimilate, giving us the sword of the archangel Michael with which to courageously conquer the anxiety-producing dragons of uncertainty and oppression.”

Phosphorus. Phosphorus never occurs alone in nature. Exposed to air it combines at once into a mineral compound, and it must be isolated in the laboratory to be had at all. Set free again, “it burns brightly.” Uriel writes that this quality of light and warmth, properly prepared, serves “to help reinvigorate those suffering from exhaustion from the flu.”

Quartz. Rock crystal is crushed to a fine powder — “destroying the beautiful form but releasing its energy” — then diluted and triturated by hand until it will dissolve. The process returns “rock hard crystal to a liquid state,” making, in Uriel's words, “formative, regulating crystal energy available to the human being.”

Blackthorn and purple coneflower. Prunus spinosa is the hedgerow tree that flowers on bare black wood before a single leaf appears — the earliest white blossom of the year, long associated with endurance through cold. Echinacea stands beside it.
