Archangelica Eucalyptus Ointment
Close observation of a plant tells you a great deal about how it works — its form, its substances, and the way it grows and changes over time. Form and function are not accidental, and neither is reducible to active ingredients alone; those are only the material expression of the plant’s life.
Archangelica is a biennial, which is unusual in itself, and it grows only in damp soil, preferably near rivers or standing water. In its first year it stays close to the ground and builds a giant root and large feathered leaves that spread horizontally up to three feet. It looks powerful, but it is strongly held in — like a deep breath drawn and not yet released — and at that stage the plant is full of a mucilaginous, resinous milk and aromatic essential oils. In the spring of its second year it shoots suddenly upward into a flowering stalk five to six feet tall, expands to its utmost, and dies away.
The milky sap is reminiscent of lymph, and the plant’s whole gesture — drawn in below, then a great warming breath outward — is why it sits at the centre of this preparation.
Eucalyptus oil is pressed from the dry, leathery leaves of native Australian trees, a plant so fiery that sunlight alone can sometimes set living trees alight. It is worked in alongside the Archangelica, in small amounts, for the heat it carries.

How to use
Apply to the chest and throat, add a flannel covered hot water bottle on top. It can be used every 1–2 hrs throughout the day and night for acute care, decreasing to 2–3 times a day as symptoms improve.
