Robert Powell, PhD is an English-American researcher, mathematician, eurythmist, and movement therapist whose work has opened new ground in anthroposophical Christology, astrosophy (the spiritual science of the stars), and the cosmic aspects of sacred dance. Trained originally in mathematics and astronomy at the University of Sussex, he encountered Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophy in the early 1970s while researching at the British Museum Library, and has worked within that spiritual-scientific context ever since. His doctoral thesis, The History of the Zodiac, laid the foundation for a lifelong inquiry into the cosmic dimensions of the life of Christ and the figure of Mary Magdalene.
Powell is the founder of the Choreocosmos School of Cosmic and Sacred Dance — a development of the cosmic aspects of eurythmy through which the patterns of the starry heavens are danced and meditated bodily. He is also co-founder, with Karen Rivers, of the Sophia Foundation of North America, an organization devoted to deepening the renewal of the Divine Feminine within the Christian-Rosicrucian stream. His major books — Chronicle of the Living Christ, Christian Hermetic Astrology, the Hermetica, The Sophia Teachings, The Astrological Revolution (with Kevin Dann), and Cultivating Inner Radiance and the Body of Immortality, among many others — offer readers a path that integrates rigorous research with deeply lived contemplative practice.
Powell continues to teach and lead seminars internationally — annual programs at the Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland; in Roncegno and Assisi, Italy; and at Sophia Foundation gatherings in California. He edits the annual Journal for Star Wisdom and has composed eighty-four cosmic dances. His work draws on a stream reaching back through Willi Sucher and Valentin Tomberg to Steiner himself.
